USAID Deputy Administrator Steinberg Travels to Honduras, Guatemala, & Mexico

WASHINGTON, D.C. – From December 12-18, Donald Steinberg, deputy administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), will travel with Assistant Administrator Mark Feierstein to Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico to visit USAID projects, announce new initiatives, and meet with government officials, civil society, and USAID partners.

On December 12-13, Deputy Administrator Steinberg will travel to Honduras where he will meet with President Porfirio Lobo to discuss USAID’s ongoing work in Honduras, including crime prevention and food security.  Deputy Administrator Steinberg will announce a new public-private partnership with TIGO, a regional cell phone company, which will provide internet access, cable TV, and free fixed telephone lines to each of USAID outreach centers for at-risk youth.  By 2013, there will be 40 centers in Honduras and 100 throughout Central America as part of the Central America Regional Security Initiative.

From December 13-16, Deputy Administrator Steinberg will travel to Guatemala.  There, he will inaugurate USAID’s new Security and Justice Sector Reform project, which will work closely with the highest levels of the Government of Guatemala to implement security and justice reforms.  Later in his visit, Deputy Administrator Steinberg will visit agriculture projects supported by USAID and meet with local Guatemalans to discuss health and gender issues.

On December 16-18, Deputy Administrator Steinberg will travel to Mexico where he will meet with government officials from President Enrique Peña Nieto’s new administration.  He will then announce a $1 million opportunity through our Innovation Fund for the Americas for Mexican innovators with new ideas to combat the country’s most pressing development challenges. Last, Deputy Administrator Steinberg will hold a roundtable discussion with Mexican journalists and human rights defenders on press freedom.
