    WIESBADEN, Germany - The place where Mary Knudson put in hours of practice for her Operation Rising Star performance in Wiesbaden could not have been more appropriate.   Knudson, who sang Martina McBride's "In My Daughter's Eyes" and won the competition, said she sings the song almost every night to her daughter at bedtime. She has sung it to her hundreds of times, she said.   Knudson beat out six other contestants to win the competition and a $500 prize Sept. 21 at the Little Italy Restaurant and Catering Center. She now has a shot at winning the military-wide competition and receiving a professional recording contract, said Joseph Harris III, head of special events for Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

    The statistics are staggering. In 2010 in America, 10,228 people died in drunk driving crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Among the 1,450 athletes were four U.S. teams -- a joint German-American police team, Wiesbaden Health Clinic, U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden and 485th Intelligence Squadron -- including Soldiers and Airmen, civilians and family members.

    GRAFENWOEHR, Germany - It's a common occurrence for construction projects to run well past the allotted time, but when you combine the Army's attention to detail peppered with German ingenuity, a project like FMWR's high ropes course can be cooked up early; finishing in time to support an important Army program is the cherry on top. A new Outdoor Recreation complex is currently underway near Dickhaeuter Lake on the Grafenwoehr Training Area. The new facility will offer an indoor climbing wall, onsite camping, a snack bar and a full range of rental gear for every adventure including canoeing, klettersteig and skiing. Additionally, the complex includes an onsite outdoor high ropes course that allows participants to climb, negotiate and traverse more than 1,000 feet of obscure obstacles. While the complex itself is not set to open until May 2013, the high ropes portion was finished early and released in support of redeploying 172nd Infantry Brigade Soldiers as they tread through the Warrior Adventure Quest program.

    EGING AM SEE, Germany - Tucked away down a small road about 20 miles northwest of Passau sits Pullman City, a replica of an American Old West town complete with saloons, wooden sidewalks, cows and gunslingers. Pullman City offers a taste of the Old West, Bavarian style, with trick riders spinning somersaults from galloping horses, and bison grazing in the fields. Disreputable cowpokes stroll the streets, rifles on their shoulders, and Native Americans perform tribal dances in traditional costumes.

    The 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team Family memorialized three of their own Sept. 6 in a ceremony at the post chapel on Caserma Ederle. More than 300 Soldiers, Family members, friends and staff filled the chapel to pay tribute to Pfc. Andrew J. Keller and Pfc. Shane W. Cantu of 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, and to Spc. James A. Justice of 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, who died while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

    Like most Americans, Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Joanne Martindale remembers where she was on Sept. 11, 2001, but she also has vivid memories of where she spent the next month and a half. Martindale, the deployment support chaplain in Bamberg, was a chaplain in the New Jersey National Guard on 9/11 and was activated that day. She said she spent Sept. 11 notifying families of the deaths of loved ones in the World Trade Center and then spent the next 45 days at the heart of the recovery and clean-up effort. Martindale said she received a phone call telling her she had been activated shortly after arriving at her job as director of chaplaincy at Ancora Psychiatric Hospital in New Jersey and hearing about the terrorist attacks.
