    The overwhelming majority of Soldiers who die in off-duty privately owned vehicle (POV) accidents do so needlessly, according to the U.S. Army Combat Readiness/Safety Center (USACR/Safety Center). Despite the fact Soldiers are taught a disciplined approach to on-duty safety through composite risk management (CRM), accident reports identify Soldier indiscipline as the primary cause of these fatal crashes. It is obvious such training works because of the declining number of on-duty accidents. Unfortunately, many Soldiers leave CRM behind when they leave the post. The result has been an alarming increase in off-duty POV accidents, especially those involving motorcycles.

    Cold weather can have numerous adverse effects on Soldiers in combat. While cold injuries such as hypothermia and frostbite are serious medical problems, a Soldier's performance can be affected well before he or she is taken out of the fight. For instance, numb skin and heavy clothes hinder Soldier task performance. Soldiers also might become emotionally detached, lose motivation or be reluctant to leave their tents or sleeping bags. Fortunately, many of these problems are avoidable if Soldiers dress properly for the weather conditions.

Twelve teams from units across Fort Stewart participated in the second annual Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers Commissary Sweep. The event, based on the popular TV game show "Supermarket Sweep," involved Soldiers guessing the prices of store items. The top three teams who guessed the most prices had an extra 10 seconds per item added to their sweep time. Most large, roll-off bins used for waste throughout the Nichols Industrial Complex have been replaced with recycling roll-offs. Wildcat, the depot's speaker for Native American Heritage Month, is a full blood Cherokee who is nationally renowned as a flute maker, flute player and historical storyteller. He peppered his message with Cherokee words and phrases, demonstrating the nuances of the language and how difficult it can be to master, since it is a polysynthetic language, one which uses a combination of words to convey a single meaning.
