The CDCs will provide the much needed child care center support for Soldiers and their Families due to the Fort's increase in active duty population from 8,000 in 2004 to more than 18,000 Soldiers by 2013. As first days go, it was a big one. Actually, it was more of a big afternoon. The Fort Lewis Tax Center opened for business at 1 p.m. Jan. 21 to process 2008 returns. By the close of business that day, just 4 1/2 hours later, the center had helped 35 clients file for $124,281 in refunds, saving them $7,199 in tax preparation fees.

Though a man of few words at the podium, it was Sgt. 1st Class Ismael Iban-CorderoAca,!a,,cs orders and actions near Taji, Iraq nearly two years ago that resulted in the successful evacuation of 21 wounded American troops injured during an attack at the Tarmiya Joint Security Station. His actions as platoon leader of 3rd Platoon, C Company, 52nd Infantry Regiment, the 3rd Brigade anti-tank company, earned him a Silver Star, pinned exactly a year ago today. It also led to him being named the Red Cross Rainier Chapter Military Real Hero, an honor bestowed upon him Jan. 23 at the Bicentennial Pavilion in Tacoma during the 15th Annual Real Heroes Breakfast.

Traditionally, becoming an NCO means taking on more responsibility. Sometimes those responsibilities are not only new to them, but are new to the Army, also. As the Army salutes its Aca,!A"backbone,Aca,!A? it is also integrating, training and educating Soldiers with the newest military occupational specialty (MOS), 51C (acquisition, logistics and technology (AL&T) contracting NCO). These NCOs are more than hand receipt holders for tables, chairs and sticky note supplies. The initial group of Soldiers to reclassify into the new MOS were logistical Soldiers in career fields 92A (automated logistics specialist) and 92Y (unit supply specialist) who performed duties involving request, receipt, storage, issue, accountability and preservation of individual, organizational, installation and expendable supplies and equipment.

As a general officer, there is one duty that makes Maj. Gen. Jim Myles question his effectiveness as a military leader. That duty: serving at the funeral of a young Soldier. During a speech to members of the Tennessee Valley Chapter of the National Defense Industrial Association at its annual membership dinner Thursday night at the Huntsville Marriott, Myles spoke about the recent deaths of Pfc. Ricky Turner, 20, of Athens, who was killed in Iraq when an improvised explosive device struck a vehicle he was riding in, and Staff Sgt. Josh Rath, 22, of Decatur, who was killed when his dismounted patrol was hit by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan. Managing the day-to-day operations of the Garrison can be a juggling act with plenty of challenges and opportunities all vying for priority attention. In one hand, there are all the new Arsenal programs involving BRAC and non-BRAC-related construction, the privatization of Army housing and the impending enhanced use leasing program. In the other hand, there are longstanding quality-of-life programs on post and the long-established partnerships within the community working for better roads, schools and other infrastructure affecting the Soldiers and civilian employees of Redstone Arsenal. And, in the midst of all that, there are the Garrison employees who are focused on meeting the needs of a varied list of tenant customers and partners. Redstone ArsenalAca,!a,,cs unique community of Soldiers and civilian employees is very much appreciated by Garrison commander Col. Bob Pastorelli. The 34-year-old high school principal traded in his suit and tie for the Army combat uniform and a single gold bar, ending his 12-year career in public education for a start in the Army.

Those junior officers are chosen from the best of their peer group, and given the arguably grueling job of making sure the general has what he or she needs to accomplish a variety of missions. Sgt. 1st Class Sylvester Taylor, an administrative specialist, is a member of the Army Reserve who was ordered to active duty in 2004 to support Task Force Marshall.

While most Soldiers enjoyed time off during Block Leave, construction crews took advantage of the vacated buildings and completed $1 million of renovations to almost every Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training barracks. The renovation focused on removing mold, replacing broken fixtures, updating the plumbing and painting walls and ceilings in the latrines and laundry rooms. Aca,!A"Mold in the barracks does not present a clean, healthy environment, so the work in the barracks was very much needed,Aca,!A? said Garrison Command Sgt. Major Lewis Kellam, who jumpstarted the project.
