During World War I, almost half of all Harley-Davidson motorcycles produced were sold for use by the U.S. military. At war's end, it is estimated that the Army used some 20,000 motorcycles in their efforts, most of which were Harley-Davidson. Marcus Jr., 21, of Long Beach, Calif., who died May 3, 2004, in Balad, Iraq, when his military vehicle left the road and flipped over in a canal. He was assigned to 3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division. His brigade commander at the time was then-Col. Dana J.H. Pittard, now Brig. Gen. Pittard, commanding general of NTC and Fort Irwin.
