"We're going to roll up our sleeves and we're going to lay down programs that are looking forward into the future. That way, we can start nesting and getting the resources that support those programs," said USARAF Commander, Maj. Gen. David R. Hogg.

    More than a year ago, a team of Kansas National Guard Soldiers set up a solar shade system here that produces two kilowatts of power. With relatively no maintenance, the system continues to silently and steadily produce eco-friendly electricity from the sun. Recently, Maj. Tim Franklin, the Uniformed Science Technology Advisor to U.S. Army Africa and Steve Tucker of the U.S. Army Natick Research, Development and Engineering Center traveled to Djibouti to assess the power shade system and train Soldiers on its use.

    The U.S. Army Africa (USARAF) Command Surgeon directorate was honored to have according to some as one of the most experienced surgeons in the world come visit Caserma Ederle, Aug. 10, to discuss an ongoing joint project between USARAF, Vicenza Hospital and Africa. Dr. Franco Favretti, chief of surgery at Vicenza Hospital, presented different possibilities for an ongoing project in Africa. His main ideas included providing infrastructure, developing institutionalized programs, promoting sustainable efforts that strengthen African health care capacity and preparing medical professionals on the continent by fostering and strengthening a network of continuing education and mentoring programs.

    Cadets from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis visited the Tanzanian People's Defense Force (TPDF) Naval Command Training Center in Dar Es Salaam, for training recently. The students came at the invitation of the Tanzanian government to visit TPDF junior officers and exchange training philosophies, best practices on leadership styles and introduce the junior officers to one another to facilitate future working relationships.

    Soldiers from the 399th Combat Support Hospital instructed Malawi Defence Force (MDF) medical staff and Soldiers from the 404th Maneuver Enhancement Battalion, May 5, at the Kamuzu Barracks, on a variety of procedures to help them better respond to combat-related injuries. The four-day course is designed to be an information-sharing exercise between the MDF and U.S. Soldiers participating in MEDREACH 11, a joint humanitarian medical exercise taking place in Malawi. "Their Soldiers are very intelligent," said 1st Lt. Jason J. Proulx, a Combat Life Saver instructor with the 399th Combat Support Hospital in Mass. "They are asking very appropriate questions and answering appropriately. I have no doubt that there will be a 100 percent pass rate."

    To combat the affects of tropical diseases, and to ensure the health and safety of all Soldiers operating in the U.S. Africa Command operational area, the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, in coordination with the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, has resurrected the teaching of its formerly defunct Tropical Medicine Course (TMC) and revamped it for the 21st century. The TMC was first taught in 1941 and discontinued in 1991, after 50 years. It was resurrected in 2010 in response to the operational needs of AFRICOM and the Special Operations Command.

    The stairwell in Community Development Center in downtown Djibouti City was packed tight Sept. 13 as more than 180 children rushed out of the building, each carrying a bundle of school supplies, a T-shirt and a smile passed on by the U.S. Army 418th Civil Affairs Battalion. The distribution of the welcome supplies resulted from a close collaboration between U.S. Army Maj. Michael Guiles, 418th CABN, and director of School District 5, Mariam Youssouf.

    Crowds gathered, some with pre-registered tickets in hand, others with just a hope of being seen by a healthcare professional in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sept. 9. "I saw a crowd of people and asked what was going on," said Ousmane Kalotho Mutuala, a Kinshasa resident. "When they told me it was for medical care, I immediately went and got my friend who can barely see because his eyes are so bad and came back to try and get in." Congolese and American military medical personnel saw approximately 2,000 patients during four days of outreach as part of MEDFLAG 10, a joint exercise that took place Sept. 6-18.

  • 173rd Airborne paratrooper to be awarded Medal of Honor for heroism in Afghanistan

    The White House announced Sept. 10 that Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta of Company B, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, will be awarded the Medal of Honor. President Barack Obama called the Vicenza, Italy, based paratrooper to congratulate him personally on the exceptional award, to be bestowed in recognition of acts of gallantry beyond the call of duty. When enemy forces in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley ambushed then-Spc. Giunta's platoon on the evening of Oct. 25, 2007, the infantry team leader braved heavy enemy fire to rescue fellow paratroopers. The Hiawatha, Iowa-native is the first living service member to earn the award since Vietnam. The medal will be presented in a ceremony at a date and time still to be determined.
