National Grade Crossing Inventory Overview

The purpose of the U.S. DOT National Highway-Rail Crossing Inventory Program is to provide a uniform national inventory database that can be applied to the improvement of safety at highway-rail intersections.

The information can be used for  planning and implementation of crossing improvement programs by public and private agencies responsible for highway-rail crossing safety.

For Crossing Inventory purposes, a crossing is defined as those tracks that exist between a pair of the same type of warning devices.
