In our job, just getting to work is extreme. We freefall out of an aircraft and use our ram-air parachute to land at a precise location - on land or at sea. We operate on airfields with motorcycles, travel cross-country on skis, or climb mountains - these are just a few of the ways we get to work. When we get to the job, we can save lives or take them, whatever the mission requires. 

We're Air Force Special Tactics, and our motto is "First There...That Others May Live." Our team members perform one of four important jobs: Combat Control, Pararescue, Special Operations Weather or Tactical Air Control Party.

tabCombat Control 

"First There"
Trained FAA air traffic controller who deploys first into hostile or denied territory to survey and secure assault and landing zones. They can guide in military aircraft or direct precision attack from fighters and bombers. More

tabAFSOC Pararescue  
"That Others May Live"Trained paramedics who can locate and save injured personnel in any environment on the planet. They can defend their patients and themselves during combat or special operations missions.  The pararescue career field is owned by Air Combat Command, however a select few join units in Air Force Special Operations Command. Training requirements are identical.  More

tabSpecial Operations Weather 
"Weather Warriors"Meteorologist who provides immediate and accurate weather information and forecasts deep behind enemy lines. They are proficient in a multitude of lightweight weather and communications equipment in addition to weapons. More

tabTactical Air Control Party 
TACPPerforms and manages Tactical Air Control Party operations.  They provide Air Force assistance and expertise in planning and controlling combat air resources. They also operate and supervise communications nets to support Army ground maneuver units.

Eyesight Requirements: 
-  Standard:
Must be at least 20/70 or better in both eyes and both correctable to 20/20 with glasses.
Must have normal color vision
-  Waiver possibilities: If one eye is 20/70 or better and other no worse than 20/200, or if both eyes are no worse than 20/100.
- Note: PRK and LASEK surgery is approved by AF.  Applicant must wait one year after procedure, pre and post conditions must be met.  LASIK is not approved for military freefall.
Flight Physical: Must be able to pass a Flying Class III 
Age: Must join Air Force before 28th birthday. If person has any military time, it is subtracted from his actual age, if result is less than 28 he can still join. For example, person is 31, but had 4-yrs active duty. Subtract 4 from 31 = 27. 
Height: Min. height 4'10" up to 6'8"  
Weight: Maximum weight (In compliance with AF standards table, however, maximum weight for jump school is 250 lbs.)

tabPhysical Ability Stamina Test  
Combat Control / Special Operations Weather / Pararescue Physical Ability Stamina Test Criteria
The PAST requirements are designed to test for a minimum fitness level for entry into the CCT/SOWT/PJ training pipeline. CCT/SOWT/PJ candidates should continue to train throughout their cross-training application and the recruiting process, to exceed these minimums in order to enhance their chances of success.

Candidates Must Pass Every Element of the PAST.  Be advised, the requirements have changed for each career field.

As of June 1, 2011, the requirements include:
CCT PAST  
- 2 x 25 meter underwater (Pass/Fail, 3 min between each) with 10 min rest 
- 500 meter swim (freestyle, breaststroke, sidestroke), max time 11 min 42 sec with 30 min rest
- 1.5 mile run, max time 10 min 10 sec with 10 min rest
- Pull ups in 1 min, 8 x minimum reps with 3 min rest
- Sit ups in 2 min, 48 x minimum reps with 3 min rest
- Push ups in 2 min, 48 x minimum reps with 3 min rest 

SOWT PAST
- 2 x 25 meter underwater (Pass/Fail, 3 min between each) with 10 min rest
- 500 meter swim (freestyle, breaststroke, sidestroke), max time 14 min with 30 min rest
- 1.5 mile run, max time 10 min 10 sec with 10 min rest
- Pull ups in 1 min, 8 x minimum reps with 3 min rest
- Sit ups in 2 min, 48 x minimum reps with 3 min rest
- Push ups in 2 min, 48 x minimum reps with 3 min rest 

PJ PAST
- 2 x 25 meter underwater (Pass/Fail, 3 min between each) with 10 min rest
- 500 meter swim (freestyle, breaststroke, sidestroke), max time 10 min 07 sec with 30 min rest
- 1.5 mile run, max time 9 min 47 sec with 10 min rest
- Pull ups in 1 min, 10 x minimum reps with 3 min rest
- Sit ups in 2 min, 54 x minimum reps with 3 min rest
- Push ups in 2 min, 52 x minimum reps with 3 min rest
