About NAMRU-3

 
 

The U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 (NAMRU-3), which was established in 1946, conducts research and surveillance to support military personnel deployed to Africa, the Middle East, and Southwest Asia. The mission also includes the evaluation of vaccines, therapeutic agents, diagnostic assays, and vector control measures.

NAMRU-3 has modern research laboratories and a medical research library. It is the only laboratory in Africa with an animal facility accredited by the American Association of Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care. It is the largest DOD overseas laboratory, with bio-safety level 3 bio-containment space and field and hospital study sites located throughout Egypt. A malaria field site is located in the upper east region of northern Ghana.

Our primary mission is to study, monitor, and detect emerging and re-emerging infectious disease threats of military and public-health importance; develop mitigation strategies against these threats in partnership with host nations, international and U.S. agencies in the CENTCOM, EUCOM, and AFRICOM areas of responsibility.

  • Egypt and the U.S. Celebrate 65 Years of Partnership in Public Health and Scientific Research
    Cairo - The U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3, also known as NAMRU-3, celebrated a historical 65 years of service in Cairo on October 20, 2011.
  • NAMRU-3 Supports Force Health Protection in the Horn of Africa
    Camp Lemonnier, established in Djibouti in 2002, is the only fixed U.S. base under the Africa Command (AFRICOM) and is also home of the U.S. Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA).
  • NAMRU-3: forty-six years of infectious disease research.
    The United States Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 (NAMRU-3), Cairo, Egypt, has been in continuous operation studying infectious diseases of military importance since its establishment in 1946, even during the lapse in diplomatic relations from 1967-1974.

  • Navy labs play public health role
    When bird flu was first detected in Egypt in February 2006, it was a US naval laboratory that confirmed the samples received from Egypt’s government laboratory were of the H5N1 sub-type, before forwarding them to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for further confirmation.
  • NAMRU-3 Deployed a Team to Sudan to Support Laboratory Analysis
    US Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 (NAMRU-3) based in Cairo, Egypt has deployed a team to Sudan to support laboratory analysis of collected samples as well as conduct on-the-job training sessions at the National Public Health Laboratory started Saturday 24 November 2012.
  • Djibouti Honors U.S. Navy Surgeon General for Medical Work
    Over the past decade, scientists from U.S. Navy Medical Research Unit 3 based in Cairo, Egypt, have worked in Djibouti to develop surveillance systems for contagions like malaria, tuberculosis and flu that affect servicemembers deployed there and the people of Djibouti and the Horn of Africa.

    The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has worked with public health institutions in Egypt in collaboration with the Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 (NAMRU-3) for over 20 years.
  • CDC Expands Emerging Infections Collaboration Abroad
    In the past several months, CDC officially established an IEIP project in Bangladesh and opened a new, larger facility (IEIP Egypt) in Cairo to facilitate collaborations between the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population, CDC, and the US Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 (NAMRU-3). IEIP is part of the Division of Emerging Infections and Surveillance Services in the National Center for Preparedness, Detection and Control of Infectious Diseases (NCPDCID).
