GSA SmartPay at GSA’s EXPO 2011 in San Diego

The GSA EXPO 2011 was a smashing success!  The location was great because everything took place near the Gaslamp Quarter (District) in San Diego which offered plenty of great restaurants for the attendees to enjoy lunch and dinner.   The weather was perfect - staying in the 80s - which allowed the attendees to enjoy themselves outside during their breaks.

EXPO started with an outstanding keynote speaker Steve Wozniak from Apple Computer, Inc.  The “Woz” spoke about where his inspiration came from to start his business.  All attendees were inspired by his words drive to succeed.
After the keynote speaker, the multitude of informative training courses began.  GSA’s Office of Charge Card Management offered:

  • Basic, intermediate, and advance courses;
  • A tax question and answer session; and
  • An overview of the SmartPay program during the Native Nation gathering.

Some of the more common questions that came up through the week included:  Where is the Master Contract?  What is Circular No. A-123 Appendix B?  Can I host additional training at my agency?  Is my IBA card tax exempt at the hotel?  And where do I find per diem rates?  Answers to all of those questions can be found on our website.

Going Green at Expo:
One of my favorite parts of EXPO this year was the GSA Flagship.  The 2011 GSA flagship went completely green and was a real hit with attendees!  The flagship display was phenomenal!  The tall plant holders with live plants were breathtaking!  Even the birds were able to sneak into the exhibit hall and relax - giving the exhibit a rainforest look that was spectacular!  In order to stick with the going green theme, the hotels were located closer to the convention center allowing more attendees to walk.  This also allowed us to save on gas and not have to rent as many shuttle buses.
