2/12/2013 - SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- For people wanting to tackle their New Year's goal of creating a savings plan, the Sheppard Airman & Family Readiness Center will present "Military Saves" week Feb. 19-22.

Classes on budgeting, the Thrift Savings Plan, credit reports and scores, as well as free credit scores are on tap during the week.

Eligible participants include active-duty, Guard and Reserve service members, their families (spouses and youth), DoD civilians and contractors, retirees and veterans.

The intent of the week is to help people combat one of the top psychological stressors for adults, money, by helping them create budgets, savings plans and mapping out investments.

"With an estimated 56 percent of divorces caused by financial stress, this is a great opportunity to help people understand how to save and create a budget," said Michelle Schroeder, A&FRC director. "We also want to help them stick with the plan as well."

The week of classes is being held one week in advance of the "Military Saves" portion of the Department of Defense's Financial Readiness Campaign. Military Saves Week 2013 is Feb. 25 - March 2, which coincides with America Saves Week.

"Our classes are being held to help augment the DoD's financial readiness campaign," Schroeder said. "We are hoping everyone will take the pledge to save."

Schroeder also relayed there would be an opportunity for class attendees to win prizes associated with the campaign.

The Airman & Family Readiness Center (A&FRC) has four educational opportunities scheduled the week before the campaign.

* Thrift Savings Plan
19 Feb / 1130-1230
* Budgeting for the New Year
20 Feb / 1130-1230
* Credit Reports & Credit Scores
21 Feb / 1130-1230
* FREE personal Credit Report/Score
22 Feb / 1000-1400 (walk-ins at your convenience)

Military Saves is also a part of America Saves, the larger nation-wide campaign for all Americans and encourages all service members, their families, and civilian employees to "Take the Military Saves Pledge."

Savers who take the pledge can opt to receive a monthly e-newsletter from Military Saves, as well as a quarterly e-newsletter from America Saves. Military Saves also works with the defense credit unions, military banks and other non-profit organizations to promote savings and debt reduction.

All four DoD service branches (Army, Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy), the Coast Guard, National Guard and Reserves participate in the campaign.
