2/2/2011 - SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- All, we are able to provide quicker updates regarding weather and base operations via our official Facebook page. Continue to monitor our Facebook page and local media for more information. (Links provided below)
Base officials will monitor the weather and roads overnight, and any changes to the base operations will be announced via the following channels:
· Unit recall procedures; all personnel should ensure recall rosters are current.
· Local TV and Radio, including KFDX-TV Channel 3 (www.texomashomepage.com), KAUZ-TV Channel 6 (www.kauz.com) and KSWO-TV Channel 7 (www.kswo.com), as well as KLUR-Radio 99.9 and KWFS-Radio 1290.
· Sheppard Facebook site
· Sheppard Twitter feed
· The SheppardLive blog
All personnel are urged to ensure they have adequate food and other supplies on hand at home. Measures are being put in place today to ensure there is an adequate workforce on base to provide food at the dining facilities for Airmen in Training and other meal card holders. In the event of a power outage or loss of heat in the dormitories, temporary shelters are being prepared, including generators and basic supplies.
Other safety tips:
· Do not drive unless it is absolutely necessary. If you have an emergency and must drive, ensure your vehicle is equipped with emergency supplies, such as food, water, blankets, shovels, warm clothing, a flashlight and a fully charged radio or cell phone.
· Ensure you have plenty of food and water at home before the storm. Cover outdoor faucets and consider letting faucets drip to prevent pipes from freezing.
· Consider having an alternate source of heat in case of power loss. However, be extremely cautious with kerosene and other space heaters and carefully follow directions for safe usage.
· If you must go outdoors, dress in layers and ensure your head and face are covered. Wear waterproof shoes and stay dry. Be careful when shoveling snow and ice--don't overdo it. If you have a heart condition, let someone else do the work for you.
· Above all: THINK SAFETY and observe Operational Risk Management practices at work and at home.
