Chapter 102 President Green Knights Military Motorcycle Club

8/3/2012 - KIRTLAND AFB, N.M. -- The Green Knights Military Motorcycle Club is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization formed in 1999 and formally recognized in 2000 at McGuire Air Force Base, N.J. It was the idea of Adam Buehler to organize base motorcyclists for activities and to bring awareness to Department of Defense riders and to individuals who do not ride. With the aid of the base Motorcycle Safety Foundation instructor, Jeff Richards, they were about to embark on a journey that they could have never imagined.

The two set out to organize and create a club where riders can get together, discuss issues of the base, fight for biker rights, help each other, participate in charity events, and enjoy going on rides. Most of all, enjoy the ride and the shared interest. After gathering a handful of riders from the base, they were able to form the first chapter of the Green Knights. It was the start of a slowly growing trend that has steadily reached across the military. The bylaws, policies and mentorship outlines have become the basis of the Air Force policy to have a motorcycle club on every base. Currently, there are 106 chapters worldwide in the Air Force, Army and Navy at active, Reserve and Guard bases. There are also chapters among international allies, such as the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force, Irish Defense Force, Belgian military and the Canadian Forces.

The club was designed and maintained for all military and DOD riders. We do not recruit. We accept members from active-duty, Reserve, Guard, retirees, dependents, DOD civilians and their families. The only requirement for membership is to ride safe and have fun.

The Green Knights work hand-in-hand with the Wing Safety Office and Security Forces to help riders retain their rights while abiding by the rules set by federal, state and local base regulations.

First and foremost, the Green Knights stand for safety. Our safety director keeps the club updated on Department of Defense, Department of Transportation and local changes to traffic laws. The Executive Board also disseminates these changes to non-club members. We fight for motorcyclists' rights on base, and many chapters have annual Motorcycle Safety/Awareness Rides each spring, to let people know lots of us are out there.

The Green Knights do not discriminate against any type of motorcycle, ATV, dirt bike or scooter. We are always looking for new members. If you are an active or retired military, active or retired DOD civilian or contractor motorcycle rider, and would like to learn more about joining the Green Knights, contact Chapter 102 president, Lt. Aaron Hock, at Aaron.Hock@kirtland.af.mil.

We at Chapter 102-Kirtland invite all motorcycle riders to our next meeting, Aug. 8. We meet in Building 201 every second Wednesday of the month, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Directions to Building 201: Take Aberdeen to the west side of base. Keep going west until Aberdeen ends at a T-intersection (past Carlisle Boulevard). Turn right (north) onto Kirtland Drive. Building 201 is the only facility on that road. The focus of our next meeting will be a discussion on the local MC gangs.

This chapter is still in its infancy and we're looking for motivated members to fill positions.

One of our major focuses as a club is to establish an esprit de corps among Kirtland riders, whether through garage nights to learn more about your ride, track days to improve techniques on cornering, or simply hitting the road and getting to know your fellow Knights. We hope to see you at the meeting or on the road.
