12/13/2012 - KIRTLAND AFB, N.M. -- Whether you prefer hiking up a white-capped mountain in a pair of snowshoes or flying down one with a pair of skis or a snowboard strapped to your feet, Outdoor Recreation has your snow-sport cravings covered.

"Lunar snowshoe hikes in the Sandias are a great way to spend a Friday evening. These trips fill up fast, so be sure to sign up as soon as possible," said Dan Isaac, Outdoor Rec adventure programmer.

Two snowshoe hikes at the Sandia Crest are scheduled each month on the Fridays closest to the full and new moon; the $20 fee includes transportation, guides, rental equipment and a cup of hot chocolate. Hikes are dependent on weather.

"Outdoor Rec offers affordable ski trips to many New Mexico resorts, including Taos, Sipapu, Santa Fe and Sandia. The trips include transportation, equipment rental and lift tickets. Let us do the driving and come enjoy a day on the slopes," Isaac said.
Ski trips typically fall on the weekends, take up most of the day, and are subject to change depending on attendance. Outdoor Rec also offers overnight ventures to ski resorts in Colorado by reservation only; prices vary during those outings, due to lodging expenses.

A limited amount of Outdoor Rec's ski trips are free through the Single Airman Initiative; once those openings are filled, normal prices are in effect for remaining spaces. For availability, visit www.kirtlandforcesupport.com or call Outdoor Rec at 846-1499.

"Outdoor Rec offers ski/snowboard wax and basic tune classes throughout the winter season. These are great for people who would like to learn how to care for and maintain their gear at home. We also have a full ski shop, where we can tune, wax and repair your equipment for a very low cost," Isaac said.

The next lunar snowshoe hike will be from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Dec. 27. The next ski trip will be Dec. 15 at Sipapu Ski Resort. The next ski/snowboard basic tune class is 5 to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 4.

For more information, call Outdoor Rec at 846-1499.
