From the National Director Legislative Corner

David Hinson

Greetings!

MBDA is gearing up for a busy month, and I’d like to share some of the exciting things we’re working on.

On September 1, I’ll be traveling to Cleveland, Ohio to welcome our newest MBDA Business Center to the nationwide network.    Joining us at the open house will be U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, Congresswoman Marcia Fudge (OH-11), and a wide range of local business leaders, trade groups and minority chambers of commerce.  I will then participate in an inaugural reception for the new MBDA Business in Manhattan, New York on September 15.

But the signature event for MBDA in the month of September —National Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week—is just a mere 30 days away and we’re counting you to join us in Washington, DC for the MED Week Conference.  Registration is still open at www.medweek.gov so hurry and sign up today.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Emerging Markets and Industries: A Blueprint for Success.” The conference will build upon the success of last year and feature keynotes from U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius and U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Shaun Donovan.  MED Week will also feature roundtables featuring CEOs from Hyatt Corporation, Costco, MasTec and Superior Communications.

On September 6, 2011, Congress will return from its annual August Recess with a full list of tasks to complete before the First Session adjourns for the year. Some of the more pressing items to take up will be spending bills for Fiscal Year 2012 and recommendations from the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction (commonly known as the Super Committee).

Each year, Congress must pass regular appropriations measures, by October 1, in order to keep the government funded. If the regular appropriation acts are not completed by October 1, then Congress must pass a continuing resolution, providing stop-gapfunding.

American Steel Placers Assisted by MBDA California NABEC

Russell E. RobertsonAs a second generation owner of a steel company, some might say that entrepreneurship flows through Russell E. Robertson’s blood. His company, American Steel Placers, Inc. is located in San Bernardino, CA and has contracts with city, county and state agencies to supply and place rebar (reinforcement steel) for concrete structures.

Created in 2004, American Steel Placers specializes in bridge construction, community public works and commercial buildings.

As a child, he watched his mother’s strength raising four children alone and managing the company she worked for in the male-dominated steel industry. By the time Robertson was 14 years old, his mother had bought out the stock to become majority owner at Puget Sound Steel after the owner died. She operated the company for 12 years in Seattle, where Robertson worked in the evenings after school for four years. He later moved to Los Angeles continuing in the steel business building bridges.
