Seniors voice concerns over GOP budget cuts
In 1935, the Social Security Act was passed. Thirty years later, Medicare and the Older Americans Act followed suit. Together, these three resources have improved the quality of life for this nation’s seniors.
But if the Republican budget proposal is implemented, senior advocates fear that years of improvements will be reversed.
“It seems a long time ago, those days when half of our seniors lived in poverty, but I have no doubt that it would not take very long to go back there,” said Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts yesterday at a field hearing of the Senate Special Committee on Aging held at the Johnston Senior Center.
Roberts was one of five panelists who testified in front of Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, who is a founding member of the Senate’s Defending Social Security Caucus.
