Sergeant Major Logan was born May 25, 1966 and is a native of Memphis, Tennessee. Born the son of a self employed carpenter and housewife, he gained an appreciation of principles and charity that eventually led to his decision to join the Armed Forces. In May of 1984, he graduated from George Washington Carver High School and joined the Marine Corps Delayed Entry Program on August 30 in the same year. In January 1985, after the completion of the delayed entry program, he attended entry-level training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina and began what has since become his career of choice.
In April of 1985, following the completion of recruit training, Private Logan attended the U. S. Army Missile Ammunition School in Huntsville, Alabama and was assigned the Military Occupational Specialty of Ammunition Technician. In July of 1985, after receiving his basic certification as an ammunition specialist, PFC Logan reported to the 3rd Force Service Support Group, Ammunition Supply Point, in Okinawa Japan. During this tour, he served as a class V (W) small arms inspector and storage specialist while supervising several off-island deployments to the Republic of Korea. In July of 1987, Corporal Logan completed his first overseas assignment and transferred to the Ammunition Supply Point in Camp Lejeune, N. C.
In November of 1987, Corporal Logan appeared before the Marine Security Guard screening team where he was nominated and accepted for independent duty as a Marine Security Guard, with little more than four months on station. After graduating class 5-88 at the MSG Battalion in September 1988, Sergeant Logan was assigned to the American Embassy, Kuwait as the Assistant Detachment Commander until October 1989. In November 1989, he requested and was granted a second Middle East tour and assumed the duties of the Assistant Detachment Commander for the American Embassy in Damascus, Syria on 25 November 1989.
In April of 1990, Sergeant Logan was selected for meritorious promotion to Staff Sergeant and appointed Detachment Commander at the American Consulate, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia until January 1991. Upon completion of his duties as a Marine Security Guard and Detachment Commander, Staff Sergeant Logan returned to his primary military occupational specialty and served as Ammunition Chief for the School of Infantry in Camp Pendleton, California.
During the successive 34 months he enrolled, attended and completed all occupational certification requirements at which time he was issued orders for a subsequent special duty assignment as a Drill Instructor, and reported to class 2-93 for Drill Instructor School at MCRD San Diego in December 1993. Upon graduation in March of 1994, he was assigned to Company M, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, where he served as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, Series Chief Drill Instructor and concluded his tour as the Company First Sergeant.
In May of 1996, Gunnery Sergeant Logan requested reassignment as an ammunition specialist and was transferred to the Marine Forces Reserve headquarters in New Orleans, La.
There he served as the Force Ammunition Chief and reserve liaison, while assuming the collateral responsibilities of the Battalion Drill master and Assistant Director of the Marine Forces Reserve Corporal’s Course. He was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant in August 1999 and held First Sergeant assignments with Companies B and Weapons Company of the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines through June of 2002 and concluded his final tour as a First Sergeant with
the 4th Marine Expeditionary Brigade under Region 2, of the Marine Corps Embassy Security Group until March, of 2004 before being promoted to his current grade.
On April 1, 2004, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major and assumed the duties of the Senior Enlisted Advisor for Recruiting Station St. Louis until September of 2006 at which time he was screened and selected for reassignment within the Recruiting command for the post of Sergeant Major, Marine Corps Recruiter School aboard the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego California where he served until September 2009. Sergeant Major Logan was detached from his duties in mid-September at which time he was reassigned in support of Operation Enduring Freedom under the Combined Security Transition Command (CSTCA), where he served as the Sergeant Major to the NATO Military Training Mission for Afghanistan. Sergeant Major Logan is currently serving as the sergeant major of Marine Corps Recruiting Command.
Sergeant Major Logan’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars, the Navy and Marine Corps commendation Medal with gold star, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Good Conduct Medal with silver star and one star, the National Defense Service Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with three bronze stars and the Kuwait Liberation Medals of both Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
Sergeant Major Logan is married to the former Dina Kalanzi of Amman, Jordan. They have one son, Michael Jr.
