7/29/2011 - SHEPPARD AFB, Texas -- When trying to find a summer job as a student, options can be limited. But Sheppard's 82nd Force Support Squadron's Civilian Personnel Office vastly expands opportunities and job capabilities for students through the summer hire program.

This unique military program allows college and high school students to get a glimpse of the working world by directly assisting civil service employees and military members throughout the summer.

The summer hire program is a competitive program full of students with many different career goals.

The Civilian Personnel Officer, Sandra Brooks stated, "The summer hire program is a win-win for Sheppard and the local community. It provides base organizations much needed assistance with workload during the summer months. Plus, the students gain work experience that will be invaluable in meeting their future career goals."

Not only is this widening student's summer occupations it is showing them how the base runs and its overall atmosphere, something many people have never experienced.

"It's like their own little community out here," stated Jordan Beach, assigned to the Levitow Fitness Center. Beach's work is compiled of the upkeep on the base sports facilities and moving equipment. "It really makes me consider working on base in the future."

Beach is not the only one who sees the potential of a long term job at Sheppard. Jason Wilson began working in Protocol in 2008 as a summer hire and after graduating high school, he decided to come back to be what is called a "stay- in- schooler." This allows him to work throughout the year as he maintains his undergraduate studies at Midwestern State University.

"I decided to continue working on base because the job opportunity and career potential is outstanding," Wilson said. "I get to work with so many interesting people and get to meet some of the most powerful men and women in the United States Air Force, like the Commander of the Air Education and Training Command and the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force. I wouldn't trade my experience for anything and I look forward to continuing to work in Protocol and conquering the challenges it presents."

For many students, their main job on base is to simply help out their supervisor in any way possible. This may include cleaning out old files on the computer or making new packets for customers.

Summer hires aren't just limited to organizational tasks. They have opportunities to help prepare for award banquets or festivities, supervising different media events or going to see retirement ceremonies and change of commands. The summer hire experience allows the student to expose their own talents and focus positive, young energy into different projects and ideas.

The Civilian Personnel Office and the agencies that volunteer to take on a summer hire are working to prepare students for life after getting an education, showing them the workforce first hand, and giving them a constructive way to spend their summer vacation.

Summer jobs may seem like just a way to earn money but at Sheppard Air Force base, they present a valuable opportunity to show students their own capability.
