8/19/2011 - SHEPPARD AFB, Texas -- Have you noticed a change in the taste and odor of your water in the last month? Unfortunately, this is a consequence of our current hot weather and drought conditions; however, rest assured that the supplied water is safe for you and your family to drink. The city of Wichita Falls is working on a solution, and they expect the taste of the water to improve within the next two weeks. Sheppard Bioenvironmental Engineering will continue to sample and monitor your water to ensure you continue to receive quality drinking water on Sheppard Air Force Base. You can obtain a copy of the latest Drinking Water Quality report from the Sheppard AFB Web site or from the Bioenvironmental Engineering office at the Sheppard AFB Clinic.

In the meantime, to help improve the taste of your water you can try one of these simple and inexpensive alternatives. Use a point-of-use filtering system. Some of you may have these water filtering systems built into your refrigerators; just ensure to change the filters at the manufacturer's recommended intervals. There are a number of brands like Brita, Culligan and Pur that make either filtering pitchers or units that attach to your sink faucet. Then, chill the water in the refrigerator prior to use. Additionally, you may add flavor to the water by using products like Crystal Light, Mio, sports drink mixes, etc. These items can be found in many local retailer outlets both on and off base.

If you have any questions or concerns about Sheppard AFB drinking water quality, please contact the Bioenvironmental Engineering office at (940) 676-3080.
