RELATED ORNL
USER FACILITIES
In addition to the CNMS, Oak Ridge National Laboratory operates a
number of other National User Facilities for use by the broader research
community. In particular, the facilities listed on this page offer
a variety of capabilities for materials characterization and computational
nanoscience that may enhance the research projects of CNMS users. The
CNMS has established cooperative agreements with these ORNL facilities
to coordinate proposal review and scheduling for users needing access
to multiple facilities. Prospective CNMS users are encouraged to take
advantage of these related user facilities during planning, proposing,
and conducting research at the CNMS. Details about the capabilities
of each of these user facilities can be found on their individual web-sites
using the links provided below.
- Shared
Research Equipment (ShaRE) User Facility
The Shared Research Equipment (ShaRE) User Facility is one of three Electron Beam Microcharacterization Centers supported by the Scientific User Facilities Division of the U.S. Department of Energy. ShaRE provides advanced electron microscopy and related
microanalytical facilities for studies within the materials sciences.
Most ShaRE projects
seek correlations at the microscopic or atomic scale between
structure and properties in a wide range of metallic, ceramic,
and other structural
materials. CNMS users can request access to ShaRE facilities
in their CNMS proposal by inserting a one-page
appendix.
- Neutron
Scattering at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and High Flux
Isotope Reactor (HFIR)
Neutron scattering techniques provide exceptional tools for
studying the structure and dynamics of materials at the molecular
level. With
the High
Flux Isotope Reactor—the highest flux reactor-based
neutron source for condensed matter research in the United
States—and the
Spallation
Neutron Source—the world's most intense pulsed
accelerator-based neutron source—ORNL provides neutron
scattering capabilities unavailable anywhere else in the world.
CNMS users are encouraged to take advantage of ORNL’s neutron
scattering facilities by submitting a
separate proposal to the ORNL Neutron Scattering Science
User Program. CNMS staff members will be happy to assist CNMS
users to identify the appropriate neutron scattering resources
and
develop competitive beamtime proposals. Please contact the
CNMS User
Program Manager or any CNMS staff member if you would like
such assistance.
- National
Center for Computational Sciences
The National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) provides
the most powerful computing resources in the world for open scientific
research. It is one of the world’s premier science facilities—an
unparalleled research environment that supports dramatic
advances in understanding
how the physical world works and using that knowledge to
address our most pressing national and international concerns. CNMS users
who require
high performance computing are able to obtain access to NCCS
computers
and receive assistance in running codes on them through submission
of a CNMS user proposal.
- The
High Temperature Materials Laboratory
The High Temperature Materials Laboratory (HTML) helps solve
materials problems that limit the efficiency and reliability
of advanced
systems for power generation and energy conversion, distribution and use.
Instruments available at the six HTML user centers have extensive capabilities
for
characterizing the structural, chemical, physical, and
mechanical properties of materials at the nano- and micro-scales
and over a wide range
of temperatures.
Please contact the HTML directly to inquire about their
facilities and learn whether it may be appropriate to request
access to the HTML as
part of your CNMS user project.
