11/19/2012 - WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Seabee staff and students from the 366th Training Squadron's Center for Seabees and Facilities Engineering Learning Site Detachment at Sheppard Air Force Base (CSFE Det Sheppard) ventured out into the community of Wichita Falls, Texas, and put their construction skills to use assisting the Children's Aid Society in a major playground upgrade on November 7-8.

Under the guidance of crew leader Construction Electrician 1st Class Jennifer Mosby, CSFE Det Sheppard instructor, 10 students spent two days clearing mulch and excavating two large playground areas in preparation for rubber matting placement. Their support saved the Children's Relief Society an estimated $4,000 in labor costs.

"I have to have the mulch replaced on a routine basis which means time and money that I don't have," said Lisa Choate, Children's Aid Society staff member. "By replacing the mulch with the rubber matting, not only is it maintenance free, but it's also safer for the children. We are very grateful and excited to have the help of Navy personnel on this project."

"The project was very cool to work on," said Constructionman Apprentice Dustie Bond, Navy student and volunteer. "I really enjoyed helping out and giving back to the community. It really made me feel good as a person. The great thing about it was that while we were there we met a couple of kids who said when the grow up they wanted to be in the military!"

"Anytime community leaders need assistance and we have personnel available; we are happy to lend a hand," said Construction Electrician Senior Chief Joseph Johnson, Assistant Officer in Charge,CSFE Det Sheppard.

The Children's Aid Society was established in 1912 to address the problems of children who were abused, neglected, abandoned or runaway children and teenagers experiencing significant family conflict. Today the home primarily provides services to Child Protective Services children and Juvenile Probation youth ages two to 17 who are transitioning back to their families.
