11/19/2012 - SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Staff Sgt. Mark Frederickson of the 364th Training Squadron was named the the 82nd TRW "Commander's Wingman of Choice" award winner for the week of Nov. 19-23.

The 82nd Training Wing "Commander's Wingman of Choice" award program is the commander's way of acknowledging Airmen for a job well done and to recognize Airmen who exemplify the spirit of the program.

Criteria for consideration include outstanding duty performance, community involvement and exemplary leadership.

Go by name: Mark

Duty title: Instructor

Hometown: San Diego, Calif.

Years of service and time on Sheppard: 10 years / 1 Year 1 Month

Family: Kathy Vu, Wife

Education: CCAF - Associates in Instructor of Technology and Military Science
Working on Associates degree from American Military University in Database Application Development

What inspires you: Knowing that there is always someone better than me, which gives me the motivation to always strive to be better. Being a role model for the young Marines, Soldiers and Airmen, because they are the future of the Armed Forces. This is usually their first stop after boot camp (recruit training) to get the training they need to make a difference in the fleet forces.

Future goals: I want to obtain my Bachelors Degree in Information Technology. I am also currently putting together a Warrant Officer Package. I plan to run an Ultra Marathon and complete a Triathlon.

Greatest accomplishment: Earning the title of Marine. Finishing the 2009 Rock 'n Roll Marathon with a time of 4:13 and finishing the 2012 Hotter 'N Hell 100k Bike Race.

Hobbies, off-duty interests: I like to run, bike and swim. I enjoy playing volleyball, football, ultimate Frisbee. I watch football (favorite team San Diego Chargers) and soccer (favorite team Los Angeles Galaxy and Arsenal Gunners)

Reason for submission:  Staff Sgt. Frederickson continually exceeds everyone's expectations in his chain of command. As a Marine on an Air Force base, he has put the extra effort in to adapt to the Air Force way of life as well as bringing the tough love mentality of the Corps to the Air Force cadre here at Sheppard. Tackling a major struggle sister service instructors deal with in attaining the mandatory CCAF degree, Staff Sgt. Frederickson set the standard by earning 33 credits, two months prior to the one-year suspense. He is also working outside his primary career field yet, was instrumental in the revision of four blocks and over 330 pages of course material in the high-risk tower climbing/rescue course.  This brought the course in-line with Air Force and industry safety standards. Staff Sgt. Frederickson also set out on three mobile training teams, teaching tower climbing/rescue fundamentals to 30 Airmen. His efforts saved the Air Force $36,000 in TDY costs. Finally he is set to become our first and only joint service squadron Physical Training Leader with training scheduled for 20 Nov 2012. His work with the Airmen, Soldiers and Marines of the Telecommunications schoolhouse embody the very spirit of what it means to be a Wingman and Battle Buddy to those he serves with.

Commander's comments:
Staff Sgt. Frederickson is an outstanding choice for the Commander's Wingman of Choice award. He is a role model NCO who makes a positive impact amongst our Airmen, Soldiers and Marines. Additionally, Staff Sgt. Frederickson is a true military professional and has shown great adaptability while assigned to Sheppard. He truly embodies the whole-person concept. - Lt. Col. Monica Madero, 364th TRS commander
