Services: The Preventive Medicine Service is responsible for the promotion of health, and the prevention or reduction of disease for the community at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield. Available preventive medicine programs are Epidemiologist and Disease Surveillance, Army Public Health Nursing, Environmental Health, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Hearing Conservation, and the Comprehensive Clinical Evaluation Medical Evaluations. Epidemiologist and Disease Surveillance analyzes risk factors and trends associated with medically important diseases to ensure their timely identification and containment.

Public health activities include, but are not limited to, outbreak investigations, sexually transmitted disease control and treatment, environmental heat and cold injury surveillance and prevention, and medical advice for overseas travelers and troop deployments. Army Public Health Nursing mission is to facilitate wellness in the community through assessment and education. This includes health risk appraisals, blood pressure/cholesterol screening, wellness education and counseling, HIV education, home visits, community wellness activities, child care inspections, and other prevention programs. Environmental Health minimizes and controls health hazards by conducting water analysis, food service inspections, child-care inspections, swimming pool inspections, insect pest surveillance, and supervision of regulated medical waste. When needed, recommendations are provided for corrective actions and future control measures. Advice on temperature risks are provided in the summer to prevent heat injuries. Occupational Health’s mission is to promote the health of the workforce by reducing the risk of occupational illness and injury. Commanders, managers and supervisors are assisted in providing workplaces which are free from recognized health hazards that are likely to cause injury, illness or death. Industrial Hygiene identifies, evaluates, and recommends measures to control risk factors and stressors in the work place that may cause sickness, impair health, and affect well being.
