Yokota prepares for Viking Challenge

9/29/2011 - YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan -- The second annual Viking Challenge Relay will take place at the Yokota High School track on Oct. 22 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Yokota's Route 56 will be hosting the Viking Challenge, a 12-hour relay race consisting of eight to 10 member teams who continuously walk, jog or run, to raise funds for the Combined Federal Campaign.
The registration fee is $100 per team. Upon registration, members will receive pledge sheets to keep track of money raised for the event.
"The team members will ask friends, family and co-workers to sponsor them during the event by donating a flat rate or pledging a specified rate per team mile," said Staff Sgt. Amanda Contreras, 374th Medical Support Squadron patient administration NCO in charge.
Contreras first participated in the Viking Challenge when she was stationed at Travis Air Force Base, Calif. When she arrived at Yokota, she noticed that the relay race had never been hosted here. She worked with Route 56 to institute the fundraising event and succeeded last year.
"I ran in the Viking Run at my last base, and thought Yokota could really benefit from an event like this," said Contreras. "It was a great way to raise money for charity, to stay in shape and to have fun."
Last year, Route 56 was able to raise $8,400 from the 14 teams that participated. This year, they have a goal of raising $10,000 and boosting the participation to 20 teams.
"We were very successful last year," said Contreras. "This is a great event for everyone to come out and have fun raising money for charity."
Bystanders are encouraged to bring chairs, barbecue grills and coolers to the event.
"Last year, people were grilling and hanging out," said Contreras. "We had music playing throughout the day, and it really helped raise morale."
According to its official website, the CFC is the world's largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign with the mission of promoting and supporting philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all.
