2013 School Concert Series

The U.S. Coast Guard Band invites you to attend its 29th annual School Concert Series for students in Leamy Hall Auditorium on the grounds of the historic U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. The concerts will begin at 10 a.m. on April 23, 24, 26, 29, 30, May 1 and 3 and will last approximately one hour.

This year the Coast Guard Band will present a program entitled, Coast Guard Heroes: A Fantastic Four.  In this year’s program four historical figures will be telling his or her story incorporated in music highlighting the Coast Guard’s Core Values.   Douglas Munro the only Coast Guard recipient of the Medal of Honor saved 200 marines at Guadalcanal in 1942, his story highlights his Devotion to Duty.  Ida Lewis, “The Bravest Woman in America,” saved over 40 lives during her time as a lighthouse keeper in Newport, RI.  She was honored in 1881 with the Gold Lifesaving Medal from the United States Government for her abilities as a life-saver.  Joshua James a sea captain and Life-saving Station Keeper during the late 1800’s earned respect leading his men on life-saving missions and is credited with saving over 600 lives during his lifetime.  These Coast Guard historical figures will appear in uniform during the hour long concert and give a speech during or before a selection of music.

Background

The concert is primarily geared for grades 4 - 8, and is designed to be both educational and entertaining. Over 100,000 students have attended our young people’s concerts over the past 29 years, and all indications are that this year’s concert will be as popular as ever.
