Heyy...I will be turning 17 this march(and have plans to enlist in the US Army) but I am green card holder...I really wanna know after my basic training when I'll go to college...can I join the ROTC programme and become an officer after I graduate.
Because there are some military branches who would not let me become a commisioned officer because I am non citizen.
For every branch, you must be a U.S. citizen to become an officer. You can still enroll in ROTC, but cannot recieve a scholarship or contract until you receive citizenship.
To seek U.S. Army service, you must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National or a legal resident alien of the United States; if not, you must have an I-551 or G-845 to join the U.S. Army. You may apply for that here: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis Army regulations prohibit us from assisting or sponsoring you into the U.S. Once you have an I-551 or a G-845 verifying your approval for permanent residency, you can process for enlistment.
ACM21 ... I think I will be a US citizen by the 3rd year of my college degree...so if I am being enrolled in the ROTC from the freshmen year ...do I have any chances of being an officer with everyone else.(after 4th year of college..during the graduation) and also when i'll start my college as a non citizen would the Army pay for my college?
thanks a lot
You have to be contracted by junior year. If you can't then, you can always apply to OCS. No, you are not eligible for ROTC scholarships if you are a Green Card holder.
So does that mean like...US army would not pay for my college fees at all??
Not if you're looking to commission. The only way that works is if you enlist, then you get the Post 9/11 GI Bill and that. The only ways to get them to pay for it to commission is ROTC scholarship or West Point.
