Introduction

The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program is a 4-year post doctoral education program at Womack Army Medical Center, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  This fully accredited program was established in July 2001 and is one of the best rated programs in the country.  Womack Army Medical Center presently has 125 bed capacity that is expandable to 477 during times of war or natural disaster.  The hospital serves a population of over 50,000 active duty soldiers, and airmen; in addition to the 160,000 eligible family members, retirees and other beneficiaries.   Womack Army Medical Center is dedicated to ensuring quality education for tomorrow’s military providers by supporting multiple residencies within its facilities; Family Practice, Podiatry, Nurse Anesthetists, Physicians Assistants, in addition to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program.  The Fort Bragg Dental Activity Command also dedicates much of its resources to the support of higher education of the Endodontic and two-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency (BRAVO) Programs.

The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department is housed within the dental clinic on the second floor of Womack Hospital; there are 54 operatories for its amazing group practice concept; 10 for Oral Surgery, 1 for Oral Pathology, 2 for Pediatric Dentistry, 1 for Dental Hygiene, 2 for Orthodontics, 2 for General Dentistry, 1 for Periodontics and 1 for Prosthodontics; this includes the room for after hours dental emergencies.  There are also two fully operational prosthodontic laboratories that support the program.  Our radiographic technology is fully digital; which includes panoramic, cephalometric, and 3D Cone Beam Computed Tomography within the clinic, as well as hospital access to medical grade CT scans, MRI and other imagery as needed.  The clinic is also equipped with two state- of- the- art Surgical Suites where general anesthesia is provided for eligible patients. 

The OMS program practices evidence based medicine evidenced by combining a progressively graduated sequence of clinical and hospital experiences with the comprehensive study of the basic biomedical sciences to ensure the highest quality of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery procedures combined with total patient care.  The program is further structured to meet the unique requirements needed to manage maxillofacial combat injuries, in addition to the long range reconstruction and rehabilitation needs of our combat veterans.
