Grill with care

7/25/2012 - YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan -- With summer now in full swing, Yokota residents are urged to use caution and care when operating any sort of grill.

According to the 374th Airlift Wing Safety Office, the Hearth, Patio and Barbeque Association website states that 82 percent of all U.S. households own a grill or smoker, and the majority of those owners use their grills regularly.

"Since most grill owners operate their equipment without any harmful incidents, people forget that serious injury can occur from being reckless or absent-minded when using a grill," said Tech. Sgt. Jason Scott, 374 AW Ground Safety craftsman.

Here are some ways to stay safe while grilling this summer:

- Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.

- Never leave your grill unattended.

- Let coals completely burn out before disposing of them by wrapping them in heavy-duty aluminum foil and placing them in a non-combustible container.

- Do not check for gas leaks with an open flame.

- Avoid using liquids, such as gasoline, as starter fluid.

- Open the lid of a gas grill when trying to light.

- Completely turn off all liquid propane tanks when not in use and store the cylinders outside.

- Stand to the side of the grill when starting it, rather than directly over it.

Master Sgt. Ignacio Castro Luna, 374 AW Ground Safety manager, hopes that people remember these simple safety tips throughout the summer months.

"The Wing Safety Office wishes for Team Yokota to enjoy a mishap-free summer when it comes to grilling," he said.
