Senator Boxer`s Message to the UN Climate Change Summit
Wednesday, December 7, 2011
Dear Friend:
Today, as Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, I held a press conference to send a clear message to the Summit of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Durban, South Africa.
And that message is this: there are leaders in the U.S. Congress who understand the urgent threat facing the globe, and despite reports to the contrary, many Members of Congress are committed to lessening the impacts of unchecked climate change.
To watch my press conference, please click here. To read my remarks on this urgent issue, click here.
Sincerely,
U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer

The hard scientific evidence for global climate change (aka "Global Warming") is now undeniable. In fact, many scientists are convinced that we have already passed the "tipping point". Any hope that we have of mitigating the potentially disastrous effects of this (e.g., sea level rise, species extinctions such as the polar bear, the northward movement of diseases such as malaria, loss of crop friendly land in the temperate regions, etc...) is going to require a concerted and unified effort by the entire human race. It is unexcusable that the United States (for short term economic reasons; ignoring the long term economic effects) has chosen to ignore this. Thank you for continuing to stand up for not only the welfare of the United States but also the welfare of our planet as a whole.
Philip, Escondido
The US should not sign onto any UN initiatives which will force us to abide by international laws. We have our own laws and judicial system. It is dangerous for us to surrender to other courts, laws, or systems in any way. We can make our own decisions here, about environmental concerns. I am part of the green building construction industry. We need to use our own resources, like oil, to lessen our financial dependence upon other nations. By using our own oil NOW, we will be able to develop the means to use less oil in the future. Please protect America first. We will lead the way to solve these problems, if the government just gets out of the way. Juliet, Santa Barbara
Why are we dragging our feet on this ? Why are not the solar panels on the White House? Why are the best wind generators and solar panels not made in the US?? Why is the US still the biggest polluter per capita in the world ? Why when the polar caps are melting do we still insist on using dirty energy? We are not stupid, and we are waiting for those we voted for to lead us out of this environmental mess. No nukes , no oil. It’s time to go clean while it can still make a difference . Do it today. Paul, Garberville
Thank you for standing up with those concerned about climate change at the Convention in Africa. The United States has been stalling, sadly, failing in its potential leadership role in this critical arena. I still believe that moving aggressively towards sustainable energy (and its related infrastructure) would be a boon for our economy, as well as a relief for our struggling environment. Catherine, Santa Cruz
We in CA need to be more proactive about our water usage and most importantly make sure we are collecting as much rain water as possible when it rains. I live in LA and the gutters overflow causing property damage not to mention the loss of rain water we need to actively work to start saving water!!! Rebecca, Sherman Oaks
Climate change legislation is a failed issue in the U.S. Congress... as it now is in Canada and throughout Europe. Senator Inhofe is correct, the global warming scam is done in our lifetimes. Even the president has turned his back on this non issue! Your uneducated ranting about needing to "do something," that would severely restrict economic growth in this country would be comical... if it weren't so sad. Over a decade of climate cooling, and you are still stuck in the 90's. Do you remember all the hype over global cooling in the 1970's? Durbin will be a complete failure... (for you scammers).. as it should be. Kyoto will be abandoned there by Canada, and probably by many other nations as well. Stop lying to the American people! Climate change is a natural cyclic phenomenon. Gene, Huntington Beach
There truly is no greater threat to California and the world. Please continue to be as aggressive as possible on this issue, and do not hesitate to use all resources available to overcome the incredibly short-sighted opposition. Thank you again on behalf of our entire family, particularly our children. Matthew, Los Angeles
The temperature of the earth is dependent upon the heat we receive from the sun which has been variable for millions of years. Any change due to human activity is slight and of NO importance scientifically. Ten thousand years ago a glacier a mile thick covered the entire state of Wisconsin, It was not melted by yuppies driving around in SUVs, but by changes on the sun's surface. The "Global Warming" you are discussing is a scientific fraud; it is preposterous to attribute jt to any human activity. Howard, Watsonville
We need to continue to shift to renewable energy sources and away from nuclear and fossil fuels. Please continue to work for policies that support this transition as rapidly as possible. We cannot afford to wait. As recent MIT studies show, we are already committed to a global temperature rise above the safe 2 degree levels. Please keep working to have our government accept science and face the facts so that we can avert more disastrous changes. That is especially important for semi-arid southern California. Kathleen, Beverly Hills
As a Wildlife Biologist working here in California, I deal with this issue on an almost daily basis - and you are spot on with your analysis of the situation. We have a lot of work ahead of us, and the opposition is (politically) strong, but I am heartened that there are some people like you in congress that will listen to the scientists and fight on. Chris, Barstow
It is Global Warming that is the issue. Al Gore's movie was the 1st large public exposure of this issue. There is not a small minority challenge to the belief that humans are primarily the cause of it. At http://www.oism.org/pproject, over 31,000 people with science related disciplines have signed the petition challenging the AGW theory. Many are climate specialists. How can so many educated people differ? Who are the 97% of scientists that say AGW is happening? Before large sums of tax payer money is spent, we need to know for sure. We could spend large sums of money without any results. Climate will always change no matter what humans do. Greenland was green enough to farm since farm tools were found. But it became too cold to farm there. Now most of the land is covered with snow and ice. The warming certainly was not human caused. Solar output variations are most likely the cause of the majority of warming and cooling. We need to take better care of our environment but not with this approach. Thank You. Richard, Thousand Oaks
I am skeptical of your well intentioned impulse to spend taxpayer money and direct how people live their lives in order to prevent climate change. It seems to me that it is hubristic to believe that you know what the grandchildren of all Americans want many years in the future. While you believe they would want us to do whatever it takes to preserve the present climate, it is very possible that they would prefer we not spend money that such actions would cost, because they will be able to adapt to climate change for a much lower cost, and will have wealth to spend on other priorities (such as bringing clean water and providing jobs to poor people in the world). Rather than project your priorities on the grandchildren of all Americans, please focus 24/7 on how to get unemployed Americans back to work. They are the ones who will decide whether to keep you in office. Sincerely, Caleb, Newbury Park
The polls I have heard about indicate that fewer Americans believe that climate change is caused by human activity and their “belief” trend line is continuing downward. How and why are we misinforming ourselves on this? Robert, Huntington Beach
Is anyone making the connection between climate change and warfare? These endless wars are devastating to the environment. A fighter jet uses $50,000 an hour in gas. These endless wars are unsustainable both financially AND environmentally. It concerns me that no one seems to be addressing this. Thank you for your time and consideration on this. Sincerely, Rebecca, Santa Barbara
Thank you, Senator Boxer, for your message to the delegates in Durban. I had read sharp complaints made by the delegates there, faulting "the Administration" and "Washington" for their lack of support. I was dismayed by their misinformation. My understanding is that under President Obama, significant initiatives are underway to lower carbon emissions and U.S. over-reliance on fossil fuels. To me, the problem is with our disfunctional Congress. We have a corrupt legislature that is holding the Administration back from solving problems. The corruption stems from the enormous monetary resources of corporations and their inordinate influence on campaign funding. Republican Senators and Congressmen are overwhelmingly responsible for the disfunction and the corruption in Congress that prevents the Executive branch from leading the United States to solutions to our most pressing problems. Thank you for your message to underscore your recognition and that of President Obama of the huge problem climate change is for the world's future. Ann, La Jolla
As a meteorologist, before the term environmentalist even came into use, I started to become aware that something was going wrong, wrong with the weather, something that was not in my meteorology textbooks. That something is modern mans overwhelming and almost unstoppable climate changing influence. Sincerely, Roger, B.A. Magna Cum Laude, Mathematics M.S. University Fellow, Meteorology, Santa Barbara
