For a number of years, the Energy Resources Program (ERP) has been investigating geothermal resources, a renewable form of energy that is geologically based.
More recently, the ERP has become involved in two other renewable energy resources; Biofuels and Wind. For Biofuels, an in-house workshop of USGS scientists was held in April, 2011 to learn what each is doing and to look for areas of future research and collaboration. A Wind energy workshop including USGS and outside experts was held in March, 2012. The goal of that workshop – to start the discussion regarding developing a national assessment methodology to quantify impacts to wildlife from large-scale wind energy development – is part of the Secretary of Interior’s New Energy Frontier Initiative. Future Wind activities will include meetings with small groups of experts, individual calls to colleagues, public informational webcasts, and possibly additional workshops requesting input of wind-energy experts.
