Senators Roberts and Dole Visit with
Veterans at World War II Memorial.
Throughout our nation's history brave men and women have answered the call to duty to protect and preserve freedom and liberty. In grateful response, our nation is guided by President Lincoln's charge to, "Care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and orphan." Veterans returning from current military engagements serve as a strong reminder of this solid commitment.
I have long been a supporter of our nation's veterans and their many sacrifices. I am pleased with the recent substantial expansion of veterans' health care services, benefits, and memorial services. Since 2001, veterans' health care funding has increased by more than 100 percent. While funding for medical care has seen the largest increases, other priorities have been targeted, such as mental health services (including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), homeless programs, and prosthetics and sensory aids.
I will continue to work with my colleagues in the Senate to keep our commitment to our veterans and ensure that the 250,000 Kansas veterans across the state have access to high quality health care and benefits.
