REP. FUDGE APPLAUDS RELEASE OF GILAD SHALIT

WASHINGTON, DC-- Israel will trade about 1,000 Palestinians, held by Israel and accused of militant activity, for Gilad Shalit, a Corporal in the Israeli Army, who was taken captive at age 19 by Hamas in a cross-border raid.  For more than five years, his family launched an incessant public campaign to free him.  Joined by people of good conscience the world over, the crusade included vigils, marches, and statements by world leaders.  Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) made this statement:

"The release of Gilad Shalit is a remarkable end to a five-year saga, and I wish him success in acclimating upon his return to Israel.  May he gain strength from the many people who rejoice in his release."
