Schrader Statement on Supreme Court Upholding Citizens United

Congressman Kurt Schrader today released the following statement after the Supreme Court struck down an effort by the state of Montana to limit corporate campaign expenditures, reaffirming the Citizens United ruling that allows special interests to spend unlimited sums of money in State and Federal elections:

"The Supreme Court's decision today to uphold their flawed Citizens United ruling keeps open the floodgates to unregulated and unlimited special interest spending in our elections and further corrodes the democratic foundation of our country. By equating money with speech, the Supreme Court has instituted a dangerous precedent for the way in which great sums of money can manipulate the future outcome of our elections.

"I have twice introduced a Constitutional Amendment that affirms the authority of Congress to regulate political donations and expenditures in Federal elections, permits States to regulate political donations and expenditures in State elections and ballot initiatives and explicitly bans foreign financial influence from all domestic political activities. It is critical that Congress pass a Constitutional Amendment regulating campaign finances to ensure that the voice of the majority of Americans remains greater than the immeasurable financial resources of a few."
