The Mediterranean Red List is an on-going process that aims at assessing the conservation status of the fauna and flora of the Mediterranean region considered as a biodiversity hotspot.
The Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation of IUCN with the support of several donors including the MAVA Foundation, the AECID, the European Commision, the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea, and the TOTAL Foundation, have been working together on an initiative to assess more than 2000 Mediterranean species according to the IUCN Regional Red Listing Guidelines. The taxonomic groups completed to date include mammals, amphibians, reptiles, endemic freshwater fishes, cartilaginous marine fishes, cetaceans and dragonflies. The on-going assessments include marine fish, molluscs, and aquatic plants. This initiative highlights the species that are threatened with extinction at the Mediterranean level – so that appropriate regional and local conservation action can be taken to improve their status.
