Bios

MUCS Brian Nichols

MUC NicholsSenior Chief Musician Brian Nichols joined the U.S. Coast Guard Band in 2003 and was named principal horn in 2005. Over the last fifteen years, MUCS Nichols has performed in nearly every state in the U.S, in addition to appearances in Canada, England, and Japan. He has led instrumental masterclasses in Minnesota, Florida, Texas, Utah, and Michigan, among others. Prior to joining the U.S. Coast Guard Band, Brian served in the U.S. Army Band at West Point from 1998 to 2002. He is an alumnus of the Chautauqua Music Festival and the Brevard Music Center. He was a winner of Brevard Music Center’s Concerto Competition in 1997 and the Florida West Coast Youth Symphony Young Artist’s Contest in 1994. MUCS Nichols was a guest artist during the 2003 Northeast Women’s Brass Conference. As a soloist, Brian was featured in 2008 on the USCG Band’s tour of the southeast United States performing Camille Saint-Saens Morceau de Concert. In addition to his performing duties, he is also the Band’s Tour Logistics Coordinator.

Notable engagements throughout his professional career include performances with the Smothers Brothers, John McDermott, Arlo Guthrie, Kevin Eubanks, Anne Murray, Dudley Moore, Mitch Miller, and the Irish Tenors. Brian holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music from Florida State University where his instructor was William Capps. He has also recently studied horn with members of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Boston Symphony, and Dale Clevenger of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
