Biodiversity and Human Health
EPA recognizes the importance of healthy ecosystems for our health and well-being, and conserving biodiversity is a primary way to sustain healthy ecosystems and the services they provide to us. One ecosystem service EPA is trying to better characterize is disease regulation that is, maintaining biodiversity may protect us against emerging diseases like Lyme disease and West Nile virus.

Collaborative Science and Technology Network for Sustainability (CNS)
Launched in 2004, CNS is a grants program that is a cornerstone of ORD's transition to sustainability. The program enables grantees and EPA to collaborate in exploring and learning about new approaches to environmental protection that are systems-oriented, forward-looking, preventive, and collaborative. The program addresses the long-term sustainability (in terms of quality and availability) of resources, including air, water, land, energy, materials, and ecosystems.

Nanotechnology
It is estimated that more than 500 consumer items already incorporate nanomaterials and that by 2015 about $1-trillion worth of products incorporating nanotechnology will be on the world market. This rapid increase of potential human and environmental exposure to these new materials requires us to conduct research to evaluate the health and environmental impacts of these materials, and to develop reliable detection and test methods to avoid and prevent any unintended consquences of these exposures.

Scientific and Technological Achievement Award (STAA)
The STAA review program is a long-standing partnership between the Agency and the EPA Science Advisory Board.
