The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), which can be found in Title 5 of the United States Code, Section 552, was enacted in 1966, and provides that any person has the right to request access to federal agency records and/or information. All agencies of the United States government are required to disclose records upon receiving a written request of them, except for those records that are protected from disclosure by the nine (9) exceptions and three (3) exclusions of the FOIA.

This right to access is enforceable in court. The federal FOIA does not, however, provide access to records held by state or local government agencies, or by private businesses or individuals. All states have their own statutes governing public access to state and local records; state agencies should be consulted for further information about them.

To request records pertaining to the 440th Airlift Wing, submit a FOIA request to the 440th Airlift Wing FOIA office by mail, e-mail, or in person at the following address:

440th Airlift Wing
374 Maynard St. Suite 301
Pope Field, N.C. 28308-2409
(910) 394-5455

The request must be in writing. No telephone requests will be accepted. If you do not know the exact title of the document you are seeking, you should provide a reasonable description of the documents. The more information that you can provide about the document, the more expeditiously your request will be processed.

In your request include an address and voice phone number in which to reach you if we have questions. Also, state a willingness to pay accessible fees.
