Upon graduation, he was awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship with the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA), Colorado State University, while stationed as a Visiting Scientist at NOAA/NESDIS/STAR (2000–2004). He is currently a Senior Scientist (onsite contractor) working on site at STAR as a member of the Integrated Observing System Science and Product Development Team (IOSSPDT). His primary research specialties are in environmental infrared remote sensing, radiative transfer and satellite validation, with focus on oceanic and atmospheric applications. Other research interests include atmospheric aerosols, air-sea interactions, boundary layer and marine meteorology, and global climate change applications.

NOAA Aerosols and Ocean Science Expeditions

Since joining the IOSSPDT team at NOAA/NESDIS/STAR in 2004, Dr. Nalli has developed a professional collaborative partnership between STAR and the NOAA Center for Atmospheric Sciences (NCAS) at Howard University in Washington, D.C. At the forefront of this activity has been his participation as a Principle Investigator (PI) in the NOAA Aerosols and Ocean Science Expeditions (AEROSE), a series of trans-Atlantic intensive atmospheric field campaigns conducted aboard the NOAA Ship Ronald H. Brown that have obtained a large quantity of open-ocean correlative data for satellite calibration/validation efforts at STAR. Through a synergistic collaboration with the NOAA PIRATA Northeast Extension (PNE) project, AEROSE has now completed 8 four-week trans-Atlantic cruises: one in 2004, two back-to-back legs in 2006, and one each in 2007–2011.
