International Trade Update, June 2011 issue
The June issue of the International Trade Administration’s monthly newsletter features an in-depth report on meetings of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum this past May that focused on green growth, the needs of small exporters, and anticorruption efforts. Other reports include a look at a new online tool that facilitates finding tariff rates for 20 free trade markets, an interview with an exporter of pet care products, and a report on one of the winners of this year’s E Awards.
The Impact of Exporting on the Stability of U.S. Manufacturing Industries
This paper, part of the series “Manufacturing and Services Economic Briefs,” investigates the link between exporting and the economic stability of the U.S. manufacturing sector. The authors found that “non-U.S. sales, including exports from the United States, reduce the normalized volatility of the value of total shipments of U.S. manufacturers.”
The Commercial Outlook for U.S. Small Modular Nuclear Reactors
Small modular reactors (SMRs), many of which are built on proven, well-known technology, could meet the power and heating needs of countries worldwide while significantly reducing carbon emissions. This report takes a detailed look at the U.S. SMR industry and identifies 27 “best prospect” international markets for SMRs.
Annual Report of the Foreign-Trade Zones Board
Foreign trade zones (FTZs) are secure facilities in the United States where foreign merchandise can be warehoused or further manufactured before the payment of customs duties. In fiscal year 2009, more than $28 billion in goods was shipped from these FTZs. This and many other details are in the Foreign-Trade Zones Board’s 71st annual report, which contains details of the board’s activities during fiscal year 2009 (October 1, 2008 through September 30, 2009).
Packaging Machinery: Sustainability and Competitiveness
Sustainable manufacturing—that is, the use of processes that minimize negative environmental impacts; conserve energy and natural resources; are safe for employees, communities, and consumers; and are economically sound—is a practice that is being driven both by market forces and regulation.This report, the result of more than a year of research and interviews, examines the changing business environment for U.S. packaging machinery manufacturers, looks at sustainability as a means to gain competitive advantage, and offers case studies of five leading manufacturers in this sector.
Exports Support American Jobs
According to this report, the percentage of GDP represented by exports in 2008 was the highest in nearly a century. “The new record [level of GDP],” notes the report, “shows that the upward growth of trade in an expanding global market holds great opportunities for U.S. businesses whose leaders are thinking strategically about the future growth of their companies.”
