Mendenhall Postdoctoral Fellow Joins the USGS in St. Petersburg, FL

Brian Bossak

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)'s St. Petersburg Science Center in St. Petersburg, FL, is pleased to welcome Brian Bossak, its newest Mendenhall Postdoctoral Fellow.

A recent Ph.D. graduate from Florida State University's Department of Geography, Brian brings to the center new expertise in hurricane-related research and the development of user-friendly Geographic Information System (GIS) tools for displaying geospatial data.

His dissertation, "Early 19th Century U.S. Hurricanes: A GIS Tool and Climate Analysis," includes an examination of the relations between historical U.S. hurricane occurrence and global climate conditions since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.

No stranger to the USGS, Brian previously worked for the Water Resources Discipline in Atlanta, GA. Experienced in cartography and graphic design, Brian brings to his research the benefits of his previous professional and academic experience with climatologic investigations, photogrammetric and satellite remote-sensing studies of wetlands and land-use/land-cover change, crop assessment via integrated remote-sensing and GIS data analysis, and the application of quantitative methods to geospatial data.
Brian will work primarily with geologist Bob Morton and oceanographer Abby Sallenger on the quantification of coastal-hazard vulnerability along U.S. coasts.

As part of that effort, Brian will assist with development of Internet-based digital tools for use by both specialists and the general public interested in examining shoreline change and potential future storm impacts. Stay tuned for research updates from Brian!
