SEVIS fees for student and exchange visitors

What is SEVIS?

The Student and Exchange Visitor Program is designed to help the Department of Homeland Security and State Department better monitor student and exchange visitors. The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) maintains accurate and current information on nonimmigrant students (F and M visa), exchange visitors (J visa), and their dependents (F-2, M-2, and J-2). SEVIS enables schools and program sponsors to transmit mandatory information and event notifications to the Department of Homeland Security and State Department during the visitor's stay in the United States.

Who pays the fee?

Those who wish to enter the United States either as a student or as an exchange visitor must complete Form I-20 or DS-2019, depending on the nature of the visit, and pay the fee.

How much is the fee?

Students (USD)

  • F-1, F-3, M-1, or M-3 visa class - $200

Exchange visitors (USD)

  • For exchange visitors (J-1) except those listed separately below - $180
  • Federally sponsored exchange visitor program (program codes start with G-1, G-2, or G-3) - None
  • Summer work/travel program - $35

  • Camp counselor program - $35

When do prospective students or exchange visitors pay the SEVIS fee?

Applicants who require a visa to enter the United States must pay the SEVIS fee before going to the consulate for their visa interviews.

How is the SEVIS fee paid?

The SEVIS fee is paid online at the Student and Exchange Visitor Program website at www.fmjfee.com  Applicants will be required to pay this fee with a credit card and complete the online Form I-901.  Applicants must have their DS-2019 or I-20 in order to pay their SEVIS fee.
