MAPS Projects: Hot Spots

A Multigeographic Analysis of Hot Spot Techniques

Intramural researchers: Ronald E. Wilson, Ned Levine, Isaac T. Van Patten, Lallen Johnson-Hart, Timothy Brown

Description. Geographic hot spot analysis can show law enforcement how to best organize their resources to fight crime. This study will examine multiple techniques used for hot spot analysis and determine which ones best predict clusters of crime. Researchers will examine data from a variety of large and small jurisdictions across the United States. The results will improve the accuracy of geographic modeling and determine which factors influence whether a location becomes a crime hot spot.
