The 940th Wing is the Air Force Reserve Command's preeminent force provider for command and control, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance and mission support, in support of Air Combat Command, Pacific Air Forces and the Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency. The 940th Wing is recognized as the Air Force model for total force integration, providing in-garrison and in-theater combat support and C2ISR expertise to warfighters across the spectrum of conflict through training, developing and retaining experienced mission-ready Citizen Airmen. More than 1200 members are assigned to the Reserve wing located at Beale Air Force Base, California, including five geographically separated units at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, March Air Reserve Base, California, and Joint Pearl Harbor-Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii.

Operations TOMODACHI, ODYSSEY DAWN, UNIFIED PROTECTOR, NEW DAWN, IRAQI FREEDOM, ENDURING FREEDOM, NOBLE EAGLE, JOINT FORGE, SOUTHERN WATCH, NORTHERN WATCH, ALLIED FORCE, DECISIVE GUARD, DECISIVE FORGE, CENTRAL ENTERPRISE, DESERT FOX, PHOENIX SCORPION, JOINT ENDEAVOR, DESERT STRIKE, DENY FLIGHT, UPHOLD DEMOCRACY, RESTORE HOPE, DESERT STORM, DESERT SHIELD, Iceland Tanker Taskforce. From 1977 to 1991, the unit had aircraft and personnel on 24-hour alert under the control of the Strategic Air Command.

Approximately 168,667 accident-free flying hours in KC-135 manned aircraft as of 1 Jun 2008. Approximately 9000 remotely piloted hours of RQ- 4 flying as of 1 May 2012.

Airframes and Stations:
February 1963: "940th Troop Carrier Group" activated at McClellan AFB, Calif., C-119 Flying Boxcar
March 1974: Converted to C-130A Hercules
January 1977: Moved to Mather AFB, Calif, and converted to the KC-135A Stratotanker
September 1986: KC-135A Stratotankers upgraded to KC-135E configuration
July 1993: Unit moved to temporary facilities at McClellan AFB, Calif.
May 1998: Unit moved to current home at Beale AFB, Calif.
October 2001: Start of Pacer CRAG KC-135 conversion (glass cockpit / advanced navigation system / minimum crew of three)
April 2002: Pacer CRAG conversion complete
Summer 2005: Upgrade of KC-135E Stratotankers to KC-135R/T model complete
November 2005: President Bush approves the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission recommendations. BRAC determines the 940th ARW will change missions from flying the KC-135 to the RQ-4 Global Hawk, unmanned high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft and other intelligence missions
2005-2007: Unit continues support of Global War on Terrorism through Operations NOBLE EAGLE, ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM
Jan. 29, 2008: The first two of the 940th's eight KC-135Rs leave Beale AFB, Calif., for Seymour Johnson AFB, N.C.
May 3, 2008: The last two KC-135Rs leave Beale AFB, Calif., and the 940th Air Refueling Wing after 31 years of distinguished service. The aircraft are reassigned to the 916th ARW, Seymour Johnson AFB, N.C.
Sept. 13, 2008: 314th Air Refueling Squadron and 940th Maintenance Group officially deactivate, and the wing officially transfers from 4th Air Force to 10th Air Force
Oct. 1, 2008: The 940th Air Refueling Wing officially changes missions as directed by the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission to the RQ-4 Global Hawk and other intelligence missions.
July 1, 2009: The 940th Air Refueling Wing officially re-designates to the 940th Wing and gains the 13 Reconnaissance Squadron, 50th Intelligence Squadron, 701st Combat Operations Squadron, Detachment 1, 701st Combat Operations Squadron, 710th Combat Operations Squadron, 713th Combat Operations Squadron and Detachment 1, 713th Combat Operations Squadron under the 940th Operations Group
May 1, 2011: The 940th Wing gains the 718th Intelligence Squadron under the 940th Operations Group
