Community Profiles for North Pacific Fisheries - Alaska

Exploring Alaska's fishing communities

The Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) has developed an interactive set of maps that will allow you to explore fisheries participation by communities around the state of Alaska. By clicking on the links below, you will be able to view maps showing commercial, recreational and subsistence fisheries participation by community. You will also be able to download the community profile we have written for 195 fishing dependent communities.

Individual Profiles

In 2005, the AFSC compiled baseline socioeconomic information about Alaskan fishing communities in the first edition of Community Profiles for North Pacific Fisheries – Alaska (NOAA-TM-AFSC-160). Between 2010 and 201, AFSC went through the process of updating the profiles (NOAA-TM-AFSC-230). A total of 195 communities have now been profiled. The new profiles add a significant amount of new information to help provide a better understanding of each community’s reliance on fishing. The profiles include information collected from communities in the Alaska Community Survey, which was conducted during summer 2011, and the Processor Profiles Survey, which was conducted in fall 2011.

The updated community profiles will be published as a NOAA Technical Memorandum in late 2012/early 2013. Fisheries statistics from the draft community profiles are visually represented in the maps provided at the top of this page, and links to full profiles drafts are included both on the maps and above for convenience.

We are currently accepting public and community input on the draft profiles.
