PGY1 at WAMC is fast paced, challenging and ultimately rewarding. During the first year, interns are given a structured curriculum that will allow them to master basic skills and learn management strategies that are important requirements as they matriculate through their residency.  Below is an example of a PGY1 Curriculum here at WAMC.

First Year Curriculum

The following is a description of the Family Medicine First-Year Curriculum.

  • Orientation to Family Medicine/Residency (2-4 week block)
  • Behavioral Health (4 week block)
  • Emergency Medicine (4 week block)
  • Family Medicine Inpatient Team (8 weeks in 2 blocks)
  • General Surgery Ward (4 week block)
  • Gynecology (4 week block)
  • Intensive Care Unit (4 week block)
  • Labor and Delivery (4 week block)
  • Newborn Nursery (4 week block)
  • Orthopedics (4 week block)
  • Pediatric Clinic (4 week block)
  • Pediatric Ward (4 week block)
  • Preventive Medicine and Introduction to Research (4 week block)

In addition to these rotations, the Family Medicine intern has the following responsibilities:

  • 1/2 day each week in the Family Medicine Clinic caring for his/her assigned panel of 150 patients (continuity clinic);
  • Daily checking his/her e-mail and answering telephone consultations from his/her patients;
  • Daily team huddle with Continuity Care Team
  • 90 minutes each week in the Behavioral Science and Balint Year Group;
  • 4 hours each week in the Academic Half Day Lecture Series;
  • 90 minutes each week in Intern Foundation Class;
  • Attending Family Medicine Morning Report (See Table 1.1 for rotations this is required)
  • Seeing a minimum of 150 FM Clinic outpatient visits.
  • Attending Combat Casualty Care Course (this is waived if attended during Medical School)
  • Obtaining BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, ATLS, and ALSO certifications
  • Giving one lecture during Academic Half Day
  • Must take the either USMLE or COMLEX Step III NLT 1 April
  • One continuity OB patient will be added to the intern’s panel each month starting in Block 6. The intern will provide all prenatal care, deliver, and follow post-partum. 
  • One video clinic per quarter

The Family Medicine intern has an assigned Family Medicine advisor who monitors his/her progress and meets with him/her on at least a monthly basis. The intern receives a written evaluation at the end of each rotation, each quarter, and at the end of the academic year.
