These resources are distributed into two beamline control areas (one for 19ID and one for 19BM) and four data processing work areas (two on 19ID and two on 19BM).

In each beamline control area, SBC also maintains a desktop PC running Microsoft Windows XP Professional.  These PC’s are used primarily as an option for performing data backup to Windows compatible firewire disks.

A high speed Storage Area Network (SAN) provides over 4 Terabytes of storage per beamline.  The user’s data will be kept at SBC for not less than two weeks following the end of their scheduled beam time, after which time the data will automatically be deleted from disk!  It is crucial that the users verify their backups at their home institute as soon as possible after their beam time at SBC and contact their SBC host immediately for assistance if the backups are corrupted or incomplete.

Researchers are required to make their own copies of their processed data and/or their raw images during their scheduled time at Sector 19.  They are also encouraged to copy any results over the network to their home institute if possible.  Please read the Backing Up Data section.

All APS users are required to complete Cyber Security training (ESH223).  For more details please read APS Overview of User Safety Training Requirements

For security reasons, remote network connections are not permitted "into" SBC computers from outside of Sector 19; however, SBC does not block outgoing connections to user home institutes.  These outgoing connections may originate either from SBC computers or from laptop computers that the user brings to SBC.

While at SBC, users may connect personal computers (laptop or notebook computers) to the APS wireless network so that they can browse the “web”, check their email or reach computers at their home institutes.  Wireless access points are installed around the ring on the experimental floor.  These access points are part of the wireless/visitor networks in the APS.

Computers connecting to the wireless/visitor networks in APS are required to register through a web page before connecting to the network. For additional details about visitor network registration see APS Visitor Network Registration section.

If a users wishes to copy their data from SBC computers to their personal computers while at SBC, it may be easier if their personal computer is connected to the SBC Network using the wired ports provided in the SBC Work Areas.  There are a limited number of “DHCP” addresses on the SBC network available for this purpose.

Notice:  Computers are automatically scanned for security vulnerabilities by the APS, so please have the current security updates installed on your computers before you arrive!  Computers that fail the APS scan will not be permitted on the network.

The SBC CAT subnets are behind a firewall at APS.  When using a Web browser behind the firewall, access to URLs and references to non-standard ports (for example, port 8080) will NOT work.  To handle requests to non-standard ports, users must configure their browsers to use the firewall as their proxy
