Colonel Joseph H. Battaglia II is Commander, 940th Operations Group, Beale Air Force Base, California. He is responsible for the administration and total force integration of six geographically separated operational squadrons supporting Air Combat Command, Pacific Air Forces and the Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency.

Colonel Battaglia graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 1984, where he earned his commission as a second lieutenant. He completed pilot training in 1985 at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas, and was assigned as a T-38 instructor pilot. He served as assistant flight commander and flight examiner from 1986-89. Upon completion of Squadron Officer School, Colonel Battaglia was sent to the 614th Tactical Fighter Squadron as an F-16C pilot at Torrejon Air Base, Spain. While there, he served as Chief of Readiness and an assistant flight commander. In 1992, Colonel Battaglia moved to the 704th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Bergstrom Air Force Base, Texas, and shortly thereafter, transitioned to the Air Force Reserves. As a Traditional Reservist, he served as an F-16C mission commander, instructor pilot and scheduler until Bergstrom closed in 1995. From 1995-2001, Colonel Battaglia was assigned to the 466th Fighter Squadron, Hill Air Force Base, Utah, where he was an F-16C flight commander, mission commander, instructor pilot and flight examiner. In 2001, he transferred to the 701st Combat Operations Squadron at March Air Reserve Base, Calif., where he was the Assistant Director of Operations, Director of Operations and Senior Offensive Duty Officer. In 2005, Colonel Battaglia entered the Active Guard and Reserve program and became Deputy Commander of the 701st Combat Operations Squadron. In his operational capacity, he served as Chief of Combat Operations and Deputy Air and Space Operations Center Commander for the 607th Air and Space Operations Center. In 2008, Colonel Battaglia transferred to the 13th Reconnaissance Squadron at Beale Air Force Base, becoming an RQ-4 Global Hawk pilot and mission commander. Since, he has held a variety of leadership positions, including Operations Officer, Wing Director of Staff, Director of the Commander's Action Group and 940th Operations Group Deputy Commander. Colonel Battaglia assumed his current position as Commander of the 940th Operations Group in March 2012.

Colonel Battaglia is a command pilot with more than 6,200 flying hours in both military and commercial aircraft, including the T-37, T-38, F-16, RQ-4, Boeing 727, Boeing 737, Boeing 747-400, Boeing 777, and A319/320.
