The Anchorage National Weather Service helps out with Alaska Science Olympiad, which was held this year on April 12 at Teeland Middle School in Wasilla with students competing from all over the state. Science Olympiad is basically a "Science Olympics" for middle and high school students, with events in all aspects of the sciences. Seen here are Wendler Middle School students competing in the meteorology event, answering questions about a mesonet weather station. Louise Fode and Todd Foisy of Anchorage WFO developed and administered the meteorology event. Along with family and friends, Louise and Todd also developed and administered the oceanography, science word, five star science, and anatomy events. |

The National Weather Service's StormReady is a program designed to prepare local communities for high impact weather-related events, including thunderstorms, tornadoes, floods, blizzards, snowstorms, and high wind events. NWS Anchorage's Warning Coordination Meteorologist Sam Albanese traveled to King Cove to discuss the benefits the advantages of StormReady to its emergency managers. |

Outdoor Week is an event sponsored by the Bureau of Land Management. Sixth graders from all over Anchorage visit Campbell Tract and get a chance to explore the outdoors while learning about science. The Anchorage National Weather Service Office volunteered to lead one of the stations. Here, meteorologist Louise Fode is demonstrating a Tornado in a Bottle as a lead-in to talking about summer weather safety. |

The Anchorage National Weather Service Office held its 3rd annual Open House on May 12, 2007. People from Anchorage and surrounding communities were invited to come and learn about the weather forecast process, take part in our onsite spotter training, and watch the weather balloon launch. Here, a family listens as Lead Forecaster Eddie Zingone and Science and Operations Officer Carven Scott describe AWIPS, the workhorse behind all of our forecast products. |
