Academy of Environmental Science and Technology at Forest Hill High School |
In an effort to empower students to compete in the global market place in the areas of environmental science and technology and to link them to real-world experiences, the
Academy of Environmental Science and Technology
involves students in a variety of special projects.
One of these projects involved designing a project that would help reduce the
rate of pet abandonment. The students produced a website, video, brochure,
and coloring book.
Another project that students are involved in is producing entries for
the Palm Beach County Science Fair.
The aim of the projects is to introduce the students to the scientific method and to allow them to pursue their interests from a research perspective. The students select a topic, research it, create an experiment, collect results, and analyze the acceptance or dismissal of their hypothesis.
The USGS (in cooperation with the SFWMD) has helped install a state-of-the-art weather station on the Forest Hill campus that will help the students collect meteorological and groundwater data. The students of Forest Hill will be using these data to help forecast weather and will publish their findings in their school newspaper. The SOFIA web site will also be working with the school to help develop a similar site for their project. Read more about the Academy of Environmental
Science and Technology at Forest Hill High School!
In addition, the Palm Beach County School Board recognized
the USGS for their efforts in working with the students
of Forest Hill High School in West Palm Beach, Fla. Read more ...

Summer Fieldwork in Everglades National Park |
|
"Summer Fieldwork in Everglades National Park: A Pictorial Overview from a USGS Intern" is a seven minute audio slideshow, narrated by Paul R. Nelson.
Cruising through tidal creeks, sampling mangrove sites, pulling sediment cores, and avoiding swarms of mosquitoes are all in a day's work for scientists conducting studies in the Everglades. Paul Nelson, a USGS geologist/GIS analyst and former intern for ecologist Tom Smith, put together this audio slideshow that describes the experience of conducting fieldwork in the United State's largest subtropical wilderness.
