Chief Master Sergeant Lonnie Slater is the Command Chief Master Sergeant for Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. Air University provides the full spectrum of Air Force education, graduating 50,000 resident and 120,000 non-resident officers, enlisted, and civilian personnel each year from commissioning programs to the highest levels of professional military education.

In his role as Command Chief, he serves as the advisor to the commander on matters affecting the professional development, education, health, welfare, morale and employment of enlisted members assigned to over 1,300 locations around the world. The Chief leads in the development and education of the Air Forces enlisted corps across their entire career. He works closely with senior enlisted leaders from other services to ensure development of enlisted joint professional military education.

Chief Slater was born in East St Louis, Ill. and entered the United States Air Force in June 1985. He has served in various leadership capacities in the Services career field. In August 2002, Chief Slater became a first sergeant and served at squadron and group levels. His assignments include tours in Asia and Europe. The Chief deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as a first sergeant in Kandahar, Afghanistan. He has also served as Commandant of Kisling Noncommissioned Officers Academy and the United States Air Force First Sergeant Academy. Prior to assuming his current position the Chief served as the Command Chief, 81st Training Wing, Keesler AFB, Miss.
